In some cases, an Excel template will reformat a cell into "Date" format even though it is not set to "Date" format. The number format in the "Normal" style spontaneously changes from "General" to the "Date" format This typically happens in shared spreadsheets, but it can also happen in non-shared spreadsheets. The fix for any particular spreadsheet, however, is easy.
To resolve the issue:
- Click on the column header for the column that needs to be reformatted, so that all cells within that column will be updated when reformatted.
- Change the cell format tab from "Date" to "General". All numbers appearing in the highlighted column will revert back to a number versus a date.
- Save the spreadsheet.
- Continue with the Excel importing steps; the spreadsheet is now in the correct format.
Example: In the following screenshot, the column "Square Footage of Store" is being displayed in "Date" format. Simply follow the steps shown to convert the column into numbers versus dates.
